5 Social Media Mistakes That Your Business Should Avoid
Socks with sandals; bras with backless dresses; these things simply aren’t done. But, if we pay so much attention to avoiding social embarrassment in the real world, why do so many businesses bring it on themselves in the online world? The truth is that many businesses are guilty of committing a variety of social media mistakes that end up hurting their reputations.
Here is a short list of the top 5 mistakes businesses are making on social media:
- Replying Instead of Mentioning on Twitter
A Twitter reply can be made by hitting the reply button, but also by beginning a tweet with @usernameexample (the recipient’s handle). If this is the case, only you, the recipient, and your mutual followers can see the reply. So, if you want to mention someone and keep it visible to all of your followers, make sure that you mention their @username in the body of your tweet. Even putting a full stop before their username at the beginning of a tweet will be fine.
- Bad Hashtagging
Hashtags should be used to help get your post discovered by other users interested in your post’s subject. So, #creatinghashtagsoutoffullsentences is not going to get you any attention. Instead, use tags that are simple, relate to your post, and are likely to be searched. And, on a side note, if you put a space between two words only the first word will be the tag, so watch out for this: #online marketing. Instead, do this: #onlinemarketing.
- Hashtag Hijacking
Sometimes hashtags will trend, which means there is a great deal of attention being paid to them. Whatever you do, don’t use these to draw attention to your brand if it doesn’t relate to the trending hashtag. A furniture company a while back used #iphone to draw attention to its posts, but this move backfired when people pulled up its posts only to find they had nothing to do with iPhones. This can lose you popularity instead of help you gain it, so avoid this at all costs.
- Double-Linking on Facebook
If you post a link to Facebook it automatically fetches the article, video, etc. and displays it for you. So, when you’re typing your description, remove the original link. This can make your company look amateurish and create embarrassment. So, unless you really need the second link for rankings, delete it.
- Forgetting to Post Images
Humans react to visual content before text, so it’s never a good idea to skip adding an image to your post. You may have some of the greatest ideas ever formulated in your industry, but people’s eyes will, unfortunately, go right to the cute puppy post below yours. So, in order to avoid being overlooked, post an image that compliments your words.
How to Best Avoid Social Media Bloopers
The above are just a few common mistakes that businesses make when posting on social media. To detail them all would take a thesis, which you certainly don’t have time to read. So, to ensure that your social media is in good hands and safe from slip-ups, be sure to leave it to the professionals.
